Image-guided patient positioning
Past activityAccurate patient positioning is a prerequisite for precise radiation delivery. We developed and translated into clinical use an imaging system based on an industrial robot manipulator carrying a C-arm detector, enabling 2D/3D registration from radiograph pairs and CBCT-based patient alignment at the CNAO facility in Pavia. In a subsequent project at PSI, we extended this registration approach to topogram imaging acquired with a sliding CT, calibrating the system for 2D/3D registration using CT scout pairs, an effective solution for daily patient alignment in proton therapy.

Robotic C-arm imaging system for patient positioning at CNAO
Development and clinical translation of an imaging system based on an industrial robot manipulator carrying a C-arm flat-panel detector. The system enables flexible 2D/3D registration using pairs of orthogonal radiographs as well as cone-beam CT (CBCT) acquisition for patient alignment. The robotic design allows arbitrary source-detector geometry, enabling both radiograph-based and volumetric positioning workflows at a proton therapy facility.
Topogram-based 2D/3D registration with sliding CT at PSI
Extension of image-guided positioning to topogram (CT scout) imaging acquired with a sliding CT system installed in the treatment room at PSI. The system was calibrated for 2D/3D registration using CT scout pairs, providing an effective and cost-efficient solution for daily patient alignment in proton therapy without the need for a dedicated in-room imaging device.
